Happy Birthday, Satine— College of Arcana and New Magic Items

Today is the birthday of the host of Geek and Sundry’s GM Tips, one of the co-creators of Maze Arcana, and most recently, Dungeons and Dragons’ new Community Manager, Satine Phoenix (@satinephoenix)! Satine is an amazing creator and powerfully positive and influential member of the TRPG community. Her work has influenced a lot of my work here on the Mage College, and I wouldn’t be the same creator or DM without her awesome presence in the community. In honor of her birthday, I have created a new Bard College, The College of Arcana, and Magic Items to celebrate.

Special thanks to the amazing Kannah (@itskhanuh) for her artwork to go alongside this new content for you all to enjoy. And again, happy birthday, Satine! Stay Awesome!

Bard College: College of Arcana

Bards of the College of Arcana are often referred to as arcanists and learn to study magic as an art form. Many arcanists use innovations in magic to inspire and entertain, adding beauty to the world through their art. Storytellers may use flairs of magic to illustrate their stories, while circus magicians may use their magic in displays of daring stunts of arcane prowess. Though these innovations in magic, they become more than capable spellcasters.

Arcanists, like other bards, are collectors of lore and are often devoted to the betterment of the world around them, though that is often in the bard’s own image. By specializing in the pursuit of the arcane, they can bend the world around them wielding powerful magic in the interest of this improvement.

These bards feel at home among other bards and among other spellcasters, especially wizards. Whereas many bards may feel that lectures about the arcane only have value as a bedtime story, arcanists tend to find discourse with a true master of the arcane the inspiration for a new story or, at least, a new spell.

Arcane Training

When you join the College of Arcana at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the Arcana skill, and you gain two cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list. For you, these cantrips count as bard cantrips.

Additionally, you can use an arcane focus as a spellcasting focus for your bard spells, and you can use spell scrolls from the wizard spell list. Also, you can attune to any item that requires attunement by a wizard.

Mystic Arcanum

At 3rd level you learn a number of techniques that channel your Bardic Inspiration into greater magical effects. Whenever you cast a spell on your turn, you can use one of the following Mystic Arcanum options of your choice. You can only use one Mystic Arcanum option per turn.
Reinforcing Arcanum. You can expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration to gain a bonus to Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration on the spell until the start of your next turn equal to the number you roll on your Bardic Inspiration die. If a creature hits you with a melee attack before the start of your next turn, you deal force damage to that creature equal to the number rolled on your Bardic Inspiration die.
Intensifying Arcanum. You can expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration to increase the amount of damage you inflict or hit points you restore with the spell. If the spell deals damage increase the spell’s damage by the number you roll on your Bardic Inspiration die and it ignores any damage resistances the target may have. If the spell restores hit points to the target, it regains additional hit points equal to the number you roll on your Bardic Inspiration die, and it has resistance to all nonmagical damage until the start of your next turn.
Pulsing Arcanum. You can expend a use of your Bardic Inspiration to teleport yourself in an energizing burst of arcane energy. Before or after you cast the spell, you teleport up to half your speed to unoccupied space that you can see and gain temporary hit points equal to the number you roll on your Bardic Inspiration die.

Arcane Specialization

Like many students of the arcane, you specialize in a particular school of magic. At 6th level, choose a school of magic. When you cast a bard spell from that school using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you regain one expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a level lower than the spell you cast and can’t be higher than 5th level.

Arcanum Savant

Starting at 14th level, whenever you use a Mystic Arcanum option, you can roll a d6 and use it instead of expending a Bardic Inspiration die.
